Fault Finding – Hard-wired Smoke Alarms

Contractor---MFF---Alarm-Sounds-No-Reason-Text

  • Find the alarm with the rapidly flashing red light on the front cover
  • Press the 'Hush' button on the alarm to silence. If it doesn't silence it, clean the alarm
  • Clean the alarm using a vacuum (see 'How do I maintain alarms?' section). Wait 10 minutes, if the alarm sounds again replace it
  • If there are cooking fumes or steam around, it may be that the wrong sensor type is fitted. Change the alarm type – see the 'What Works Where?' section

Contractor---MFF---Regular-Single-Beep-Text

  • If the green light on the alarm cover is off, check fuses/wiring
  • If the alarm is a 140 Series alarm, slide it off its base and change the battery (Alkaline 9V PP3 – Duracell MN1604 or Eveready 522)
  • If you have other alarms installed, swap with another alarm – does the beep follow it?
- YES - Remove the alarm and replace it

- NO - Check the wiring. Check if there is anything else beeping (e.g. an old battery alarm)

Contractor---MFF---Irregular-Beep-Text

  • Check wiring and connections
  • Fill any gaps were cables enter the base so cold air doesn't enter
  • Is there anything electrically noisy on the same circuit?
  • Clean the alarm using a vacuum (see 'How do I maintain alarms?' section). Wait 10 minutes, if the alarm sounds again replace it

Contractor---MFF---Alarms-Arent-InterconnectingText

  • Press and hold the Test button on one of the alarms for 10 seconds
  • Check interconnecting cables are wired correctly
  • Check there are no shorts or loose connections on the wiring

  • If a High Voltage insulation test has been carried out with the alarms in place, it will have damaged the alarms. Replace all alarms

Contractor---MFF---Test-Button-Isnt-WorkingText

  • Press and hold the test button for 10 seconds
  • Make sure the alarm is correctly connected to the base
  • If it still doesn't work, replace the alarm
