There are all different types of smoke alarm available. If you're unsure of the model number of the Aico alarms you have installed in you home, take a look at the information below.

Most alarms will be wired to the mains power in your home but will also have a built-in battery back-up to power the alarm if the mains power fails. There are two main types of battery back-up - Rechargeable Lithium and Alkaline.

The easiest way to tell which type of back-up your alarms have got is to check if the alarms have a 'Rechargeable Lithium' sticker on the front of them or not, as shown below.

Sticker = Rechargeable Lithium
This type of back-up is built-in to the alarm and will never need replacing for the entire life of the alarm (10 years).

It will automatically be charged and kept 'topped up' from the mains.

No Sticker = Alkaline Battery Back-up
This type of back-up will typically last around 3-4 years in standby before it need replacing. The alarm will beep once a minute to let you know the battery needs changing.

It's a standard 9V 'square' battery but there are specific types you should use - for more information see the 'How to change the battery in your alarm' section.

Carbon Monoxide (or 'CO') Alarms are different to smoke alarms - they are designed to detect carbon monoxide gas. Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas that can be given out by any appliance that burns fossil fuels (e.g. gas boiler, coal fire etc.). It is extremely dangerous gas that can be deadly in high doses. It's completely odourless so the only way to detect it is with a CO alarm.
