Installing Your Alarm

So, you’ve chosen the alarms you need, found your nearest stockist and now you need to install your alarm in the correct location to ensure it provides lifesaving detection and the quickest response to a fire or carbon monoxide leak.

Here’s a practical guide to siting alarms correctly, so you know where carbon monoxide, heat and smoke alarms should go.

Installing Smoke and Heat Alarms

Make sure to research where to put smoke alarms before planning installation. 

  • Both smoke and heat alarms should be sited on the ceiling, as centrally as possible within the room/area they are installed.
  • Site alarms 300mm from walls, light fittings or any obstructions: this is to ensure that they are outside of any ‘dead air’ spaces that occur in corners and spaces where the airflow may be blocked.
  • There should be an alarm within 3m of every bedroom door to ensure they can be heard.
  • Alarms should be positioned between high-risk rooms and bedrooms.
  • Alarms should not be sited inside bathrooms or too close to a bathroom door, as steam and moisture can affect them.
  • Once installed, make sure to properly test smoke alarms regularly. If you need to, make sure to replace fire alarms promptly.

How Many Alarms Do You Need in a Typical Home?

The number of alarms you need depends on the size, layout, and features of your home. British Standards recommend that smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarms are installed to provide early warning in all key living and circulation spaces.

As a minimum, most homes should have:

  • A smoke alarm on each storey of the property
  • A smoke alarm in circulation spaces, such as hallways and landings
  • A smoke alarm in the main living area
  • A heat alarm in the kitchen
  • A carbon monoxide alarm in any room containing a fuel-burning appliance, or where a flue passes through

Installing Smoke and Heat Alarms Around Your Home

Installing Stairways:

  • Site alarms on the flat ceilings at the top and bottom of the stairs – do not install on the sloped ceiling directly above the stairs.

Peaked and sloped ceilings:

  • Smoke Alarms – site a maximum of 600mm vertically down from the apex
  • Heat Alarms – a maximum of 150mm vertically down from the apex on the slope

Beams:

  • Where the depth of the beam is less than 10% of the room height, install the alarm at a distance of twice the depth of the beam or 500mm, whichever is less.
  • Where the depth of the beam is more than 10% of the room height – treat the beam as a wall and fit alarms on both sides of the beam, or if the beam is less than 600mm deep, install an alarm on the underside of the beam.

Installing Carbon Monoxide Alarms

When installing Carbon Monoxide Alarms, it is important to note that there are different siting requirements depending on whether the alarm is being installed in the room with the fuel-burning appliance or not.

In a room with the fuel-burning appliance:

  • Alarms should be installed on the ceiling
  • Should be fitted between 1m–3m from all potential sources of Carbon Monoxide
  • Sited 300mm from walls, light fittings or any obstructions – this is to ensure that they are outside of any ‘dead air’ spaces that occur in corners and spaces where the airflow may be blocked
  • If the fuel burning appliance is in a confined space (for example an enclosed cupboard, 1m x 1m), then the alarm should be sited on the ceiling just outside the room.

In a room without a fuel-burning appliance:

  • Alarms should be sited at breathing height
  • If installed within a bedroom, this could be at the height of the bedhead

Should Your Alarms be Interconnected?

Interconnecting alarms means that when one alarm is triggered, all alarms in the system sound at the same time. This can provide earlier warning, especially in larger homes or properties with multiple floors.

Interconnection can be achieved through hard wiring or wireless radio interlinking, depending on the alarm type and installation method. While not mandatory in all owner-occupied homes, interconnected alarms are strongly recommended where possible to improve audibility and response time.

Alarm Installation FAQs

What should I do after installing a new alarm?

Once installed, test the alarm using the test button to confirm it is working correctly. Alarms should be tested regularly and cleaned periodically to maintain performance.

Do I need alarms in bedrooms?

While smoke alarms are not always required inside bedrooms, there should be an alarm within 3 metres of each bedroom door to ensure it can be heard while sleeping. If you have a fuel-burning appliance or flue in the bedroom, you will need a carbon monoxide alarm.

Can alarms be installed near lights or vents?

Alarms should be positioned at least 300mm away from light fittings, vents, and other obstructions to avoid dead air spaces that could delay detection.

Should alarms be wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted?

Yes, many alarms are designed for straightforward installation by homeowners, particularly battery-powered models. Mains-powered alarms or systems that require interconnection may need a qualified installer. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant British Standards.
