Students Take Part in Business in Action Day at Shrewsbury Town FC with Support from Aico
Over 175 Business Studies students from Shrewsbury College took part in an engaging and fast-paced Business in Action Day held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, supported by a range of local employers collaborating to provide real-world business insight.
This is the second consecutive year that Aico has attended the event and facilitate a workshop, strengthening the ongoing partnership between Aico and Shrewsbury College. Aico’s CSR & Community Engagement Leads delivered a presentation centred on the company’s core values and effective strategies for inducting new colleagues into the business, before running an interactive workshop with student teams. As part of their challenge, Aico asked teams to design a one-week induction plan that reflected the company’s values, mission and ways of working. Students were encouraged to think about communication, culture, learning styles and how to integrate new starters into the business in a structured and engaging way.
Laura Opechowska, CSR & Community Engagement Lead at Aico commented of the students enthusiasm: “Seeing the students’ teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm was inspiring. They approached their tasks with maturity and fresh perspectives, showing great potential for any future workplace.”
Shropshire-based employers including Aico, Shoothill, Housing Plus Group and Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors each presented a real-life business problem they are currently facing. Working in groups, students then had 30 minutes per challenge to analyse the scenario and develop a practical solution. Teams were judged on the quality of their idea and the extent to which they worked effectively together. Points were awarded for each activity, with trophies and prizes presented to the teams achieving the highest overall scores.
Students responded enthusiastically to the hands-on format. One participant shared: “We really enjoyed participating in the Business in Action Day and having the chance to share our knowledge and ideas with all of the experienced employers.”
Meg Murphy, Work Experience Team Leader at Shrewsbury College, emphasised the value of the experience:“It’s so important for our students to engage with employers not only to gain an understanding of opportunities available locally but also in the context of the Business In Action event to work on real life business tasks. By encouraging creative thinking, team working and time management, they develop some excellent soft skills, which they can utilise in their classwork and future job roles.”
The Business In Action event continues to strengthen connections between education and local industry, offering students invaluable experience while showcasing the diverse business landscape across Shropshire. Click here to find out more about Aico in the Community.
