Amendments to
Approved Document J
Approved Document J outlines building regulations in England for the storage of fuel system and combustion products.
The Government proposed amendments to Approved Document J. The revised document sets out amendments to guidance previously published in Approved Document J: Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems 2010 edition incorporating 2010 and 2013 amendments.
The amendments highlighted in the revised Document have been in effect since the 1st October 2022.
What did the consultation propose?
The amendments ensure that new build and materially altered properties in England have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm installed wherever a fuel burning appliance is present (excluding cookers), as per the Building Regulations, Approved Document J.
In addition, it also looked to remove the word ‘solid’ from the requirements for CO alarm installation.
In effect in England since 1st October 2022, Carbon Monoxide alarms are required for:
- Solid fuel (Including solid biofuel) appliances up to 50kW
- Gas appliances up to 70kW
- Oil burning appliances up to 45kW
